Mr André De Jager
New GM of Bayview Hotel
Introducing our new General Manager | André De Jager
The Bayview Hotel recently welcomed André de Jager, a seasoned Hospitality Manager, to the team. André brings with him a wealth of operational knowledge.
While working as an accountant for about 4 years, André realized his passion is working with people and wanted to work in an industry that offers an environment that gives new challenges on a daily basis. He then pursued qualifications in both Hospitality Management and Professional Cookery and Culinary Arts. Soon after completing his studies, he kicked off his Hospitality Career at Hatfield Manor in Pretoria as a Duty Manager. Over the next 10 years, he worked in several departments within the hospitality sector, from an Executive Sous Chef to a Rooms Division Manager and eventually to the position of General Manager, which gives him a great overall background on how the hospitality machine works. André has worked at some of the top corporate hotels within South Africa including Protea Hotel Highveld, Protea Hotel Witbank, Capital Empire, and Capital on the Park. André now finds himself in charge of the Bayview Hotel and its energetic and vibrant team eager to provide guests with an unforgettable experience.
Asking André on his thoughts of the Bayview Hotel and what the future holds, he commented that the property is poised to become one of the best properties within the Plettenberg Bay market. With the refurbishment and planned move to a 4-star property in the next year, it is set to fulfill a gap in the market that currently exists, for a 4-star quality yet affordable accommodation option for both local and international visitors. The 1st faze of the newly refurbished floor is a true reflection of the wonderful offering that we have to come, being both airy and light and bigger than a standard hotel room. Thus, it is perfect for an extended holiday stay. The longer-term plans include some significant changes to the public areas of the hotel as well and will incorporate some needed services like gym, pool, kid’s entertainment, and a change of the restaurant to take it over to the next level. By way of distinguishing ourselves the most important thing to note is that our rooms offer comfort and size that rival that of far more expensive offerings in the town. The fact that the rooms are large enough to have the addition 2 full-size lounge chairs as well as a coffee table in, and without feeling small or cramped should speak volumes to the comfort and size of the rooms. Being situated in the extremely popular main street promenade, which is within walking distance from absolutely every amenity one might wish for, from restaurants to bars and takeaways, shops for every need, and a mere 800m from the beach. All this while still being on the quieter end of the street means that the evenings can still provide a restful night’s sleep.
André’s vision for the property is to establish it as one of the premier hotel offerings within the Plettenberg bay market that can not only supply a welcome stopover for international tour groups but also a home away from home for local travelers looking for a comfortable and relaxing holiday experience
Regarding the hurdles the tourism industry is facing post Covid19, André says that the pandemic will undoubtedly permanently change the face of tourism and travel. Restrictions on travel, that will likely be in place for some time to come, will put pressure on the industry to run hotels and guest houses at much tighter margins with lower occupancies while remaining profitable enough to ensure continuity. The industry will now need to show their adaptability to the changes to be able to remain a thriving industry in our economy going forward.
André has brought new energy and focus to the team and we would like to wish him and the rest of the Bayview Hotel team the very best of luck for the challenges ahead.
